In exchange you get a genuine country, Old West feel — a town with a real gold-mining history, a saloon that's been pouring since the 1800s, and a quiet that's hard to find this close to LA. It's the kind of place where people keep horses, ride OHVs into the hills, and sit outside at night because you can actually see the stars. Worth knowing if you're buying here: there's been organized community opposition to several proposed lithium-ion battery energy storage (BESS) facilities in the Acton area, with public hearings and an active local task force ("Don't BESS With Acton"). Residents have raised fire-safety and rural-character concerns. How Acton Got Here

A Gold-Rush Town That Almost Became the State Capital

Acton was founded in 1887 by gold miners working the nearby Red Rover Mine, and named after Acton, Massachusetts. Gold, copper, and titanium mining continued into the early 1900s, and the town's Old West bones are still visible today.

Here's the piece most people don't know: Acton was once seriously floated as California's state capital. California Governor Henry T. Gage (who served 1899–1903) owned the Governor Mine in Acton and pushed to move the capital here from Sacramento. The effort ultimately failed — but it's a real chapter of local history, not just a tall tale. And the town's 49er Saloon, opened in 1889, is still in business; the story goes you can still tie your horse to the side rail.

A Hint of Hollywood

Acton Is Quietly a Filming Town

With its Old West look and open desert, Acton has long been a working backdrop for Hollywood. According to local accounts and film records, movies and productions shot in and around Acton include Terminator 3, Little Miss Sunshine, and underwater sequences for Titanic (filmed using a pool in the area). There are active working film properties out here too, including the Acton Movie Ranch and other ranch sets in the Soledad Canyon corridor — and Spielberg's 1971 TV movie Duel filmed in the area as well.

Two of Acton's most distinctive residents are animal sanctuaries. Shambala Preserve, the big-cat sanctuary connected to actress Tippi Hedren and her Roar Foundation, is here — home to rescued lions, tigers, and other big cats. It's not a walk-in zoo; visits are by reservation and limited. The Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, a 501(c)(3) animal rescue founded by actress Linda Blair, also operates in Acton, focused on rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs.
