Tehachapi has that small-town feel that's getting harder and harder to find in Southern California. People know each other here. Great restaurants day to night, a donut shop with doughnuts the size of your head, Walmart, Albertsons, and Save Mart for everything you

need day to day.


You get all four seasons up there at 4,000 feet — the temperature stays just a little cooler than everywhere else. Wildlife, hiking, glider rides at Skylark North, car shows, Kohnen's Country Bakery downtown. Always something going on without ever feeling crowded.

Lancaster and Bakersfield are both about an hour away, which makes Tehachapi a real option for commuters — especially if you're working out at Edwards AFB. It's far enough to feel like you left the city, close enough that you're not cut off from it.

Here's the one nobody talks about: home insurance. Depending on exactly where you buy — particularly up in the more rural, higher-fire-risk pockets like Stallion Springs and Bear Valley Springs — some California carriers may not write a policy on the home at all, which can push you toward the FAIR Plan or a surplus-lines policy.
